Saturday, 3rd September, in the cooperation with the Speak Better English, the Australia-China Association of Scientists and Entrepreneurs (ACASE) hosted a seminar about how to convey a business idea efficiently and impressively. The whole seminar was held in RMIT City Campus and there were over 50 attendees, including young entrepreneurs, students from different universities, scholars and so forth. As most of them are in a preparation for the pitch night coming next month, on 20th October, the theme of this seminar is to provide some tips and suggestions to attendees when they try to attract investors in their second language-----English.
The opening of the seminar was delivered by Dr Erjiang Fu, Founder and CEO of ACASE, and he welcome all the guests and introduced ACASE and the Speak Better English, also, followed by an interesting story of his daily life about the importance of communication. Then, Marianne Sherry, Director of Speak Better English, introduced about this cooperation and what this seminar can do to help attendees draw investors’ attentions
The major section of seminar was given by another tutor from Speak Better English, named Sally Landers. Through her 10 years working experience in Business, she said that when people introduce their product, many of them are more likely to concentrate on introducing the advantages of their products, rather than focusing on the needs from their audiences. In order to impress the investors, people should better have capability to paint the pictures that can appeal in investors’ minds, and can also persuade them through projects’ social or economic benefits. In addition to that, individuals should have open mind to their competitors and have sophisticated explain to “why you not your competitors.”
On the language aspect, the core ideas of presentation are “complexity is everyone’s enemy” and “less is more”, which means the way that they convey their idea should equip with three characters: Simple, concise and clear; On top of this, using personalized words , power words, verbs, concrete nouns and conjunctions would also contribute to a successful communication. Sally Landers also gave some advice and example about checking words, stress, tone, pause and pace when communicating and how individuals should interact with the investors, including proving the need, showing the value, dealing with objection and asking for commitment. The whole section was filled with practices and attendees were guided by the tutors from Speak Better English.
The seminar ended with a thanks speech by Dr Erjiang Fu and was followed by the networking session which led by tutor Deborah Williams and Elizabeth Dartnell .We hope this seminar will not only be very helpful to participants who will join the pitch night next month, but also be practical in their daily communicating activities.
