The Victorian Prioritized Industrial Sector Information Session – Biomedical Technology and Pharmaceutical Research and Development was successfully held in the investment centre Victoria on 6 November 2017. This event was co-supported by the Victorian government, Trade Victoria, China Construction Bank-Melbourne branch, and Australia-China Association of Scientists and Entrepreneurs (ACASE). It aimed to introduce the biotech industry in Victoria to the Chinese investors.
Mr Nick (Ning) Yan, the senior Business Development Manager at Victorian government, hosted the event and introduced the guest speakers.
Dr Phil Davies, Senior Trade Manager-Biotech, MedTech & Pharma at Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources at Victorian state government, introduced the biotech business in Melbourne. He emphasized that Melbourne is the most liveable city in the world. The state government also demonstrated intensive, bipartisan support for the biotechnology sector sustained over almost 20 years and welcomes the collaboration and investment from China.
The deputy general manager of China Construction Bank-Melbourne branch, Ms Xiaoyan Ma, introduced several services the bank could provide to the immigrants on investment visa.
Dr Erjiang Fu, the CEO of ACASE, delivered a speech on the current start-up innovation in Australia. He introduced the two start-up companies that were greatly supported by ACASE.
Dr. Weijie Zhou and Mr. Li Xie presented their start-up businesses in smart stethoscope and rapid STD diagnosis kit respectively. Their talks attracted much attention from the audience and stimulated heated discussions during the tea break.
Later in the afternoon, the group was invited to visit Murdoch Children’s Institute at Royal Children’s Hospital. Dr. Joanne Boag talked about the recent research progress at the institute. She later invited Prof. Richard Saffery to give a presentation on his twin studies to investigate the dual impacts of gene and environment on epigenetic expression. He also spoke highly of his collaborator in China. Other researchers from the institute later showed the cardiac tissues which were developed from pluripotent stem cells and their use in drug screening. The group was also impressed by the digital health centre where they developed multiple applications to diagnose social disorders in children for prevention and early intervention.

下午，全体与会人员前往皇家墨尔本儿童医院参观了默多克儿童研究所。Joanne Boag博士介绍了研究所的最新研究进展，Richard Saffery教授汇报了他的双生子研究课题以及与中国的合作。研究所工作人员随后给大家展示了由干细胞培养出来的心脏细胞以及它的药物筛查应用。用于早期筛查儿童社交障碍的电子健康系统也让大家耳目一新。
